The Best Catch - Laura & Davis Weinweher
By Jean Hailey
Photography By Cargile Photography

On the night that Laura met Davis, she and a good friend were at the Dixie Chicken in College Station, trying to escape from a couple of guys that were bothering them. To avoid the two bothersome guys, the girls asked some friends a few tables over to play dominoes with them. After a few minutes a good-looking young man came over to their table and started helping Laura with her domino game. Laura and this good-looking fellow, Davis, started talking and hit it off and haven’t missed a day since.

One weekend, Davis insisted that he and Laura go to the deer camp in Clifton for the weekend. Once at the camp, the two decided to go for a bite to eat. After a nice dinner, they drove out to Laura’s favorite place in Clifton, which was a little creek that rushes over the road. As luck would have it, the creek was bone dry, so they drove further up the road to a big valley full of trees. They sat for a few minutes looking at the view. “Then Davis said Laura, and I turned around and he had the box in his hand and a big smile on his face,” said Laura. “He asked me to marry him and of course I said, yes!” Right away the happy couple drove back to the camp house to call their family and friends.

The planning began immediately because they wanted a spring wedding and did not want to wait a year and a half. They did the research and found the perfect place online called The Greenbranch. Laura knew that she wanted an outdoor wedding, but she also wanted a place that had an inside facility just in case of bad weather. As soon as she saw The Greenbranch, she knew it was the perfect place for their wedding.

After finding the perfect dress in College Station, Laura felt that she had the two most important details done, and continued with the rest. They found a cake, picked out the bridesmaid dresses, picked colors, and ordered flowers. Laura made everything herself with the help of some wonderful friends and family. They made the invitations, the flower balls for the ceremony, the favors, and the center-pieces. They decided to use the “W” (for Windwehen) as the theme for the wedding. Everything had a “W”, the cake, the invitations, the programs, and even the napkins. A huge metal “W” was hung above the fireplace to add to the theme. After months, days, and hours of planning everything was perfect.

The ceremony site was incredible and everyone did a perfect job of decorating. Flower balls, hung on shepherd hooks, flanked the gazebo and roses and Gerbera daisies hung from black ribbon from the tree that shaded the guests. The guests were seated around a small pond and the aisle was a long bridge that went over the pond and led to the gazebo where the ceremony took place. The sun came out right before the ceremony and there was a wonderful breeze. Laura and Davis chose the sand ceremony instead of the typical lighting of the candles, which added an extra special touch to their wedding. The ceremony was simple but elegant.

Immediately after the ceremony, they took some amazing pictures. The groomsmen and the groom insisted that they needed pictures of them fishing in the pond. One of the groomsmen had even brought the poles, and the best part about the picture was when the groom actually caught a fish! “One of the groomsmen caught the maid of honor when his hook got hooked in her dress!” laughs Laura. “But I think Davis made the best catch!” The photographer, Alicia Cargile, in Brenham, Texas, used her creative talent and produced some incredible photos for the wedding.

As a unique addition to the reception, each couple chose a rock song to be played for 10 – 15 seconds as they walked into the reception hall. Their names were announced, and the song played as they walked in. Laura and Davis were the last to enter. “The next hour is quite a blur,” said Laura.

“I was introduced to so many new people and I think I hugged the entire world.” After mingling and eating hors d’oeuvres, they sat down to a marvelous dinner. The toasts were made, and the newlyweds cut the stunning wedding cake. After cake, the DJ started the Grand March. The best man and one of the bridesmaids led the dance. Right before the first dance, the DJ surprised the guests with the story of how Laura and Davis met, the dating, and the proposal. “It was a neat idea because it gave everyone an idea about us,” said Laura. The DJ added a lot of humor to the story and included members of the wedding party whenever possible. After the fun-filled story, the couple danced their first dance, followed by the father-daughter dance, and mother-son dance. Later that night, Laura’s brother stunned her with a special song and a brother-sister dance. The night was filled with fun and lots of dancing.

At the end of the night, the newlyweds ran through all of their friends and family as they blew delicate bubbles. The couple would sleep upstairs so they did not have far to go. “It was a wonderful wedding, and I wouldn’t change one thing about the whole wedding,” said Laura.

As a wedding present, Davis’ parents gave them a Caribbean cruise. They left Sunday morning after the wedding to catch the ship in Galveston. They spent their honeymoon snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing in the stress-free Caribbean. After all was said and done, the groom made the best catch!
